Decatur's Scottsboro Boys Civil Rights Museum: A project to educate, heal, and preserve history

In celebration of Black History Month, we take a deeper look into a historic project underway in Decatur that aims to educate future generations on the history of racial injustice imposed upon the Scottsboro Boys.


The Decatur Scottsboro Boys Civil Rights Museum—currently under construction—is not just a museum but a community-driven effort to heal from the hateful acts of the past. The museum will tell the story of the Scottsboro Boys, a group of nine young African American men wrongfully accused and convicted of raping two white women in 1931, sparking a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights.
